Choosing The Right Plumbing Fixtures

By Scott Rodgers

Often, the homeowners rely on the plumbers for the purchases of their new plumbing fixtures. Such an attitude may affect the overall expenses of your project. A disloyal plumber would harm the budget of your project while purchasing the plumbing components such as sink, shower head, faucet etc.

Instead of allowing your plumber to make the plumbing purchases, buy the required plumbing components yourself. However, you can allow the plumber to make valuable recommendations for a particular plumbing segment.

Take a pen and a piece of paper and write down all the plumbing fixtures that you require. Consult your plumber on that front and apprehend whether the components he suggested are actually required or not. Prioritize the primary plumbing fixtures such as sinks, faucets, showers, cisterns etc. in the scheme of things. Check whether the old fixture can still work properly or not.

Tag the fixtures to be bought with the respective design, size and color. Take the measurements of the area where the new fixture is slated to be installed. To derive accurate measurements, take the help of the plumber. He would also guide you with the proportional size of the fixture to be purchased. Mark down the measured dimensions of the opening area for the new component. Write the evaluated figures on the paper against the respective plumbing fixture.

Next, determine the design and the type of the plumbing fixture to be bought. Derive a general idea from the plumber regarding the available options and make appropriate selection. Also, the new plumbing segment should complement the appearance of the existing setup. For example, the faucet should adhere to the color and look of the affiliated sink.

Visit the local hardware store and demand the fixture as per your specifications. Move onto the other stores of the area and let the salespersons suggest a price for the respective purchase. Compare the prices offered by different plumbing stores and choose a suitable one.

Derive any suggestion from the concerned salesperson regarding the building codes of your area. Alternatively, you can ask your plumber to determine the same. Apprehend whether the installation of the purchased plumbing fixture would favor your building code or not.

Once the deal is finalized, make the respective payment and ask the salesperson to deliver the purchased plumbing fixture to your home. Make sure that the product user manual and warranty card is provided in the whole package. - 30517

Carefully Finding A Plumber

By Bryant Shown

Plumbing is becoming more and more important to offices and houses, and finding a good plumber is critical when the need arises. If anything involving plumbing peaks, it disrupts many of the everyday activities that are done, so problems are usually required to be solved as quickly as possible. However, the emergency nature of plumbing problems does not mean that a person should get the first plumber that is the in phone book. Finding a plumber takes a little more patience and forethought than just looking online or in a phone directory.

Precautions

There are certain things that a person can do to find a plumber that can handle his problem in an efficient and cost effective manner. One of the first things to do when there is a plumbing issue is to ask friends and neighbors before there is a problem who they use. That way the information is on hand when a problem arises. Even if it is in the midst of a plumbing crisis, it is always best to call friends and neighbors first so that there is more assurance that the plumber will be qualified for the position.

The next thing to do when finding a plumber, as long as the house or office is not rapidly filling with water or sewage, is to get at least three quotes about fixing the problem. Even if it is an extreme emergency situation, plumbing companies are used to that eventuality and will send someone directly to do the estimate. When getting the estimate, ask for every aspect of it to be written down so that the plumber cannot go back on what they said at a later date when asking for payment. That way the person knows what to expect by the end of the project.

The estimate should not only explain cost, but also supplies and the time that it will take to complete the work. This allows the person to determine what plumber is right for them in regards to all aspects of the work. Additionally, asking the plumber what his or her licensing level is can help in finding the right plumber. The beginning level is a Tradesman license, which means the plumber has had at least two years field experience and has passed the state's licensing for that level. A Journeyman's license is next, which means the plumber has had at least four years experience and has passed that level of test. A Master plumber is the highest level, and he has had a least five years experience in the field. - 30517

Tips On Buying The Basic Plumbing Tools

By Scott Rodgers

The essence of a right set of plumbing tools can't be neglected by the homeowners. A plumbing project deprived of the services of common plumbing tools would turn more daunting and complex. Moreover, the duration of the project would exceed to limits beyond your expectation. Therefore, the basic plumbing tools need to be purchased prior to the commencement of the project.

Hence, it becomes quintessential to complement your project with the correct basic plumbing tools. You can take the help of your plumber or a local salesperson to determine the tools to be purchased. Alternatively, you can surf through the web pages of the Internet to create a list of the basic plumbing tools that you would require.

Visit the local plumbing stores and home improvement stores to inquire about the plumbing tools you want to purchase. Present your point of view to the concerned salesperson and derive any possible recommendation from him.

Initialize the purchasing by making way for a regular steel tubing cutter. Often, the plumbing repairs require the cutting of the affiliated copper pipes. The tubing cutters would provide their services in such areas of the plumbing scenario. Make sure that you choose a high-quality cutter and don't settle for a low-grade tool.

Once the cutters are purchased, look for the other basic plumbing tools such as hammers and screwdrivers. While the screwdrivers handle the screwing operation of the plumbing fixtures, the hammers handle the power jobs comfortably. The screwdrivers are available in a variety of types and sizes. Hence, purchase the selected ones that complement the efficiency of your project. When it comes to the hammer purchase, buy an-all purpose hammer that provides multitasking features.

Along with the basic plumbing tools, some power tools need to be brought in as well. A regular power-drill and a right-angled drill help you immensely during the boring operation. While the standard-sized holes are rendered by the regular drill, the bigger holes are bored by the right-angle power-drill. Also, a simple saw and a power-reciprocating saw are necessary in the regular scheme of things.

There are certain additional equipments that help you in carrying out a particular plumbing operation under safe conditions. These include the equipments such as a propane torch, a hand-held flaming tool, soldering iron, acid-core solder, paste flux solution and a pair of goggles.

Don't forget to purchase the pliers and the pipe wrenches in a variety of sizes. - 30517

Tips For Using A Compression Fitting

By Scott Rodgers

Compression fitting is a type of coupling that is used to connect two pipes or a pipe to a fixture or valve. Generally compression fittings are user-friendly, but if you do not follow some precautions then you could easily end up with a leaky connection.

In compression fitting you will get 3 parts, a cap-shaped compression nut, the compression ring and the compression seat. When you need to make a connection using this compression fitting, screw together the cap shaped nut and compression seat. In this way, ring is properly grasped by nut, seat and the pipe that you are connecting.

Normally compression fittings are used with a metal pipe. While connecting the fitting to any metal pipe, screw it tightly so that the ring makes a tight connection with the tube. While attaching this fitting, tube is also packed well with the fitting. When these fittings are used for a plastic tube, a metal tube sleeve should also be put to strengthen the connection.

Solid brass compression fittings are usually found to be costly but they last long. On the other hand, copper compression fittings are cheap to buy.

Compression fittings can be used for doing any kind of connection like at some places soldering torch or heating devices can not be used to do the connection, but you can use the compression fitting. Also if you want a temporary connection, you can use compression fitting as it can be easily removed.

For these fittings you don't need to spend much money and you can easily get these fittings in market. These fittings are not disturbed by high pressure or any of the poisonous gas. These pipes can be easily attached as they don't need soldering.

While counting the disadvantages of this fitting, the feature that tops the list is that it is not robust in nature. The connection done using this fitting should not be disturbed as little movement in pipe could result into a leakage.

Lastly, it is not a good idea to reuse compression fittings as after one time use, they create a connection along their own concentric shape. Due to this, the connection will not be strong as earlier. Therefore it is suggested to replace it with new one. - 30517

How To Replace A PVC Valve ?

By Scott Rodgers

Easy installation and lighter weight has made PVC piping a popular source of bathroom and kitchen plumbing. In order to join the pipes for application that require larger pipe lengths, cement or special adhesive are used. Since it is not possible to reuse the pipe once fitted with the cement, one needs to replace them when required.

To replace any section of the PVC pipe including the PVC valve, one needs to cut apart the pipe and the replaced pipe is attached using couplings and connectors.

Let us discuss some steps one should consider while replacing a PVC valve. In order to work on any pipe length that is already placed, you need to first shut off the water supply to that pipe. Also, gather two couplings, a connector and the PVC valve that is needed to be replaced. Properly measure and mark the pipe length and the rest of the items you will be accommodating with the valve

Next, slowly trim the pipe from the marked place. Also, file the edges of the leftover pipe to make it smooth and even. Moreover, it is better to roughly assemble all the couplings, connectors and the valve before applying any glue or solvent.

Now, measure the total length of the PVC valve and deduct the length of two slip joints located on the couplings. This is the final PVC valve length. Subtract this PVC valve length from the total length between the two couplings. The remaining distance is divided for each cut length of the pipe connectors.

The most important step is to make the measurements of the valve and coupling lengths. For this, firstly measure the original dimension of the valve and decrease that of the slip joints from that. The resultant is the final length of the valve. Deduct this length from the couplings length. You are now left with the place to accommodate the connectors, one on each side.

Brush away all the build- ups and the dirt from the inside and outside of the joints made in all the components. Lay on some cement or the binding solvent so as to adhere the couplings and the connectors permanently.

No doubt, replacing a PVC valve is not a child's play, even then a little knowledge of the plumbing can help the homeowners to carry out the project themselves. - 30517

Difference Between A Plumbing Contractor And A Plumber

By Scott Rodgers

Many people have a misconception that plumber and a plumbing contractor are same. But it's a wrong thinking as their work is entirely different. Plumbing contractors are senior to plumbers and solve all the big plumbing issues. However, plumbers help in solving small plumbing problems.

A plumber is called to solve problem like faucet leakage, sink installation, drain blockage, frozen pipes, bathtub installation, toilet repair and many more.

When it comes to major plumbing problems, certified plumbing contractors must be your choice. Problems such as replacement of septic tanks, installation of whole piping in the house and other such big problems are handled by a plumbing contractor. They know the way to solve the problem efficiently in the first go.

Sometimes, a smaller plumbing company is leaded by a certified plumbing contractor. When you suffer from major plumbing problems, you shouldn't depend on your local plumber to fix the problem rather you should look for a good plumbing firm as they have proper tools and man power to do the job fast and effectively.

If you think that you can handover the task of a plumbing contractor to a plumber to save money then you can't do it. Plumbing contractors have got a special training and a normal plumber does not go through any such training. This creates a huge difference in the kind of work that can be offered to them.

Gas connections, flues for heating systems, installation of water heating units and installation as well as maintenance of safety devices like gas control valves, water conditioning equipment, back flow prevention equipment and gas earthquake valves are some complex tasks that a plumbing contractor can easily do. A normal plumber can't do all these things.

At last, when you decide to call an expert to help you in solving your problem, you need to be wise in choosing one. Because the decision can either solve all your problems or can put you in more trouble.

Huge amount is involved in all such projects, so you need to be very smart in deciding your choice. Do proper background checks of the person or firm you are choosing so that you don't have to repent on your decision later on. Moreover, confirm their past work performance and working charges from any reliable source. - 30517

How To Apply A Thread-Compound On A Threaded Pipe ?

By Scott Rodgers

When it comes to fixing the leaks in your plumbing fixtures then the Teflon tape gets the preference as the possible solution. However, it fails to provide optimum output when the fixture is a high-pressure one. The excess pressure of the water makes the Teflon tape difficult to bind tightly to the threaded area of the pipe.

Such pursuit takes them to the services of a specialized compound known as a thread-compound. The thread-compound requires proper handling and often leaves the work site messy after its application. However, it's proved efficiency in case of high-pressure pipe and drains make it a popular choice among the homeowners and the plumbers.

It is quintessential for you to make the connecting pipe dry before using thread-compound. This is because the compound fails to bind to the wet surface of the pipe and hence, requires a dry pipe spread. Dry the pipe with the help of a towel.

Next, take the bottle of the thread compound and pour 3-4 drops evenly on the surface of the pipe. Use the compound judiciously as the excess usage may lead to a possible damage to the affiliated plumbing setup. Place one drop of compound on the threaded area of the pipe and spread it well. Pick up the face of the pipe into which the current pipe would be screwed and apply appropriate amount of thread compound on that as well.

Connect both the pipes to each other with the help of an appropriate-sized pipe wrench. Tighten the screws well such that the water doesn't drip out of the joint.

At this point of time, clear off some excess compound that may have crept out of the thread while attachment. Use a towel or a piece of cloth to clean the compound off the surface of the pipe joint.

Wait for about 10-14 hours and let the setup solidify. Once it looks well settled, turn on the water supply and check the pipe for leaks.

No leaks in the threaded pipe confirm the success of your assignment. Clean off the mess that was created during the application of the thread compound. - 30517

The Advantages Of Having Underfloor Heating

By Tal Potishman

Having underfloor heating in your home can have many advantages. If it is coupled with renewable energy resources it can deliver significant energy and carbon emission savings. This is especially in comparison to other forms of heat emitters. However, as with most other things, underfloor heating can also have it's disadvantages, and whether or not it is for you will completely depend on you and your choice of lifestyle.

What is underfloor heating?

The warm water from the boiler system is circulated through lengths of pipe embedded in the floor. Each room has its own circuit and all circuits are connected to a distribution manifold. With each room having its own circuit, the process behind temperature control is quite simple. A thermostat is fitted in the room and connected to an electrically operated valve on the circuit serving that room.

What are the advantages of underfloor heating?

One of the reasons why many people decide to have underfloor heating installed is so that they can have the flexibility and room space to decorate how they wish. Another positive attribute is that an underfloor heating system can be suited to almost any type of flooring.

A further advantage is that you will not hear any unusual noises coming from the room, unlike radiators that can sometimes make sounds when switched on or off. This is an additional comfort, as you will not have to worry about avoiding hot radiators and you will hardly notice the under floor's heatings presence.

A problem often associated with radiators is that they tend to dry out the air. This will not be the case with underfloor heating, and thus you will feel an overall benefit to your home as a whole. Furthermore, allergy and asthma suffers will also benefit from an underfloor heating system as it has a balance of convection and radiation which minimises disturbance.

What are the disadvantages?

Although known as a great energy and space-saver in the home, underfloor heating is not suitable for everyone, and it is important to be aware of some of it's drawbacks.

For instance, if you decide to do a complete installation, you will have to be prepared to turn your whole house upside down. In order to have proper insulation in the floors, you will have to be prepared for a complete rebuild.

One problem that most people have with underfloor heating is the fact that, it can take quite a bit of time to heat up. This is particularly the case if the pipe is embedded in a solid floor. Depending on what type of flooring you have, the waiting time could even be longer. For instance, with a wooden floor, you might be looking at a 30 minute waiting period for it to warm up. On the other hand, a concrete floor could potentially take hours. You will also have to be prepared for an equally lengthy cooling period. At the end of it, it all depends on your individual taste, and what you are willing to put up with for your comfort. - 30517

Build Your Own Plumbing Tool Kit

By Scott Rodgers

Most plumbing jobs don't require the interference of a professional as they are insignificant enough to be fixed by anyone. Keeping the right logic in mind and a perfectly blended tool kit, even you can undertake a number of inferior plumbing tasks in your own hands such as leaking taps, washer replacements etc.

An ideal plumbing tool kit must be acquainted with all the general safety tools as well as the specialized tools that're meant for their respective plumbing purposes.

Beforehand, look out for a tool box that would in fact amass all the tools in it. Since the range of the tools needed in plumbing jobs is large, hence go for a large-sized tool box. Remember that the size would help in accommodating all the possible tools and also, it would not be inconvenient for you to locate a particular tool in emergency.

The elementary safety tools such as goggles, gloves and a first-aid kit get a preference in the safety scheme of the kit. The first-aid segment should primarily constitute the eye-rinse solution and the rolls of adhesive bandages as the plumbing jobs commonly lead to scratches and nicks on the body.

Once the safety kit is embedded in your tool box, start assembling the basic plumbing tools. The pipe wrenches of varying sizes(10,14 and 18) should be provided as well as the adjustable wrench should be equipped into the tool box. The adjustable wrench would prove handy in the spaces where the regular size wrenches cannot reach. In addition to these, a 5-sided plumbing fixture kit and a socket set are needful to go with.

Once work is underway, you have to deal with the cutting and joining of different types of pipes. Hence keeping the respective cutters handy will ease the job considerably. A bundle of rolled wire(often copper) should be present in the toolbox to clean off the edges and the insides of the pipes as the accumulation of foreign materials may hinder the normal flow of water through the pipe.

To handle the jobs that've behind-the-wall solutions, a drill machine as well as a torch would prove quite handful. Off course the typical repair tools such as hammer, screwdriver, inch tapes and different types of pliers would be an essential component in the overall package.

It is quite appreciative of the homeowner to keep a plumbing tool kit intact as hazards are not often foreseen and sometimes calling the plumber and waiting for him to arrive may become too late for you to prevent anything. - 30517

Plumbers Can Repair Leaking Pipes And Clogged Drains

By Adriana Noton

The professionals that work in homes, public buildings and commercial buildings installing and repairing pipes are called plumbers. They work on waste water systems, fresh water systems and gas lines. They also install fixtures that include tubs toilets, sinks and showers. The can also install dishwashers, garbage disposals and water heaters.

Most plumbers today enter the trade through the apprenticeship program. Today, this program is generally administered through community colleges and includes paid on the job training as well as classes. In the past, most of the training was handled on the job. The program may take four to five years to complete and the graduate can become a licensed plumber.

Licensing is a requirement for most states. In order to take the test for the license, potential plumbers have to show proof of work experience. The test is to demonstrate knowledge of local codes as well as general knowledge of the trade.

Most persons building a new home will need to enlist a plumber in accordance with local codes. He will read blueprints to order and provide all necessary plumbing materials. The plumber will be on the building site at least three times. His first visit will be for the rough in plumbing before floors are installed. Once the floors are installed and framing is in place, the plumber will return to install stub out plumbing. On the third visit, the plumber will return as one of the final professionals when he installs fixtures and appliances to have your plumbing in operating order.

Most plumbing systems are relatively trouble free after installation. You may find that it is rare that you need to call a plumber to visit your home for any repairs. If you do develop a clogged pipe or leak, your only choice may be to call the plumber.

These tips may help you to have even more years of trouble free operation of your plumbing.

When you are cooking dispose of grease in some way other than pouring it down your drain system. It will become a hard waterproof mass somewhere down the pipes. That mass can become a clogged pipe. It may just be in the kitchen sink, but it can also plug the entire house. Also, when working in the kitchen, do not overload a garbage disposal and flush after use will large amounts of water.

Simple drain screens in the bathroom can prevent hair plugs from forming in showers, sinks or tubs. They are very important for persons with longer hair. Be sure that you clean them after each use.

To save money on plumbing repair, purchase and learn to use a plunger. This little tool is an effective way at dislodging many plugs in your drain system. You will find special plungers for toilets and sinks.

When you do need repairs in your home or business plumbing system, plumbers can make those repairs in an effective and efficient manner. Once again you will have drains that flow freely and clean water in your home. - 30517

Troubleshooting Common Toilet Problems

By Scott Rodgers

Your toilet can suffer from different kinds of problem. To understand all those problems, you must know the basic working of a toilet. The only thing that most of us know about the toilet is the way of flushing the waste using the handle. But you need to know much more in order to have better understanding.

Normally toilets need a tank, a bowl, a handle, a trip lever, ball-cock, a stopper and flush-valve assembly for its basic working. Problem in any of the component can cause improper working of toilet flush or other problems in toilet.

The handle of your toilet is connected to a trip lever. When you press down the handle, it raises a chain or vertical rod that is attached to a stopper located at the bottom of the tank. When the stopper is raised, water in the tank runs through the flush valve. After that the water travels into the toilet bowl through small flush ports.

In all this, gravity plays a major role as due to gravitational force only water goes into bowl and then into the drainpipe. Generally, in a single flush the water present in tank finishes out. After the tank gets emptied, stopper again sets back to its flush valve seat and float ball goes at the bottom of the tank and tank start filling again.

When water comes to the toilet, water level rises. With the rise in the water level, float ball also rises. Once the float ball reaches a certain height it turns off the flow of water to the bowl. In case of some problem, the water may not stop from running. This water is then redirected from the tank to the overflow tube and then into the toilet bowl. Such toilets are referred as a running toilet.

Running toilet is one of the most common problems with toilets. However, there could be several different causes for it and you first need to figure out the main source of problem. Most of the times, the cause is a float arm that is not rising to the proper height. It can be simply resolved by bending the float arm downward.

In case the cause is not float arm then you can check your stopper. Your stopper may not be able to set properly against the flush valve seat. You can simply replace or clean the stopper and repair the flush-valve seat to solve your problem.

Besides running toilet, other common problems are associated with a cracked overflow tube and defective ball-cock valves. To solve such problems, you should prefer to replace them. Also you should replace your old ball-cock device with a new one that contains the newer anti-siphon feature. In some cases, changing individual parts is more costly and time consuming than replacing the entire assembly. - 30517

Plumbing Drain Maintenance and Saving Your Money

By Adriana Noton

One way you can do a drain maintenance inspection is to use an inspection camera. The inspection camera can be included in your preventive maintenance program and save you time and in the end money. You can build an effective system by combining drain cleaning tools and inspection cameras. What do such cameras cost? Expect to pay anywhere from four hundred dollars for a basic unit. For the professional models you can pay one thousand dollars or more.

But you have to see this as an investment that will save you in plumbing cost in the future. Drain maintenance means maintaining your pipes in smooth running condition. When you schedule regular inspections and utilize a recording system, you are able to compare plumbing conditions to track the build up rate in your drain lines. You can then plan for the right drain clearing equipment at the right time according to your schedule and not for an emergency.

There are many advantages to this plumbing system. Firstly, you can minimize the inconvenience to the building occupants; you can let everyone know in advance about the plumbing work by scheduling the next time for a drain clearing. Next workers will avoid harder more stressful work. The drain will be easier to clean because it will not be as heavily backed up compared to it have backed up completely.

The third advantage is that sewage backups, which carry with it health and safety concerns can be avoided; not to mention the terrible mess and inconvenience involved in a plumbing emergency. Begin this maintenance system with your first inspection now. Then have another one in about 90 days. This is a favorable way to implement this program initially. From your initial findings and inspection you can adapt the time line for drain maintenance in the future.

This is all about putting a system in place that will make it convenient for future inspections. Let us say for instance that after the first two inspections no change can be seen in the pipe buildup. You can then do an inspection twice a year of even once a year. You do have to realize of course that emergency conditions can happen; even if you have a lot of control over the gradual buildup in your drains. You of course need a quick response in emergency situations.

A camera tech with his water proof equipment and light emitting diode unit can inspect the area. And despite a flooded sewage filled back up, he can locate the clog and get the pipes smoothly running again.

With either situation an emergency clog or a build up over time, the cost to clean drains is less when and inspection is used before and after drain clearing. The technicians can pick the proper tools, cables or hooks or grabbers or cutters.

When they can view the specific problem and how far is the access point. This way they can quickly and efficiently complete the work. If the technicians inspect after the cleaning when the pipe is clear, they are able to make sure they have taken out the entire clog. The problem will not happen again. It was totally taken care of initially. - 30517

Technology and Plumbing

By Tal Potishman

In present times most residents of the United Kingdom take properly working plumbing systems for granted. Most do not take the time to think about the history of plumbing or the way plumbing technology has evolved over time. Plumbing has a long and interesting history: a history that is worth exploring.

It was during the Greek and Roman empires that plumbing technology first started to evolve. Basic plumbing systems were invented and installed during these empires' rule to make it easier to carry water to and from the public bathing houses that were so popular. It was this necessity that lead to the invention of the aqueduct during the Roman Empire. The aqueduct was the primary mode of plumbing and water distribution from the Roman Empire until the 1800s.

Pipes were constructed mostly from lead during ancient times and aqueducts were pieced together from stone and clay. However, this is no longer the case in modern times. Today, steel, brass, copper and plastic are the most popular building materials for plumbing and piping systems. Lead is no longer used to make pipes because the toxicity of lead is considered to be too high.

The bath houses that the Romans enjoyed are considered the predecessors of plumbing as it currently exists. Originally, public bathing only occurred while the sun was up because the bath water was only replaced once each day. Remember, it was not until long after the Roman Empire fell that bacterium was discovered and the western world learned how diseases were spread with the obvious implications on bathing and personal hygiene. In Roman times, one water change each day was all they thought they needed.

Perhaps more important than the public baths and aqueducts, though, is the evolution of the modern toilet. The toilet that is so familiar to the modern western world was first invented around 2800 BC in Mohenjo-Darco and was made from a seat placed upon a pile of bricks. In those times only the highest class of society was allowed to use the toilet. It was not until the middle of the nineteenth century that the western world adopted the sit-down toilet that was popular with the ancient Romans.

As the western world adopted the plumbing and toilet structures that were invented in Roman times the technology surrounding the systems exploded in volume and size. In less than one hundred years the western world helped toilets and plumbing fixtures advance from aqueducts and sit down holes to the sophisticated and technically complex modern marvels that western people now take for granted.

In today's plumbing systems most pipes are kept under the ground and cesspools and open sewage drains have almost been completely eliminated due to environmental and operational considerations. As the western world continues to advance it is highly likely that plumbing and toilet systems will become cleaner and more efficient as well, with further introduction of green technology and improvement in treatment of sewage and contaminated water. - 30517

Save Energy With On- Demand Water Heaters

By Scott Rodgers

Is your tank storage water heater consumes more energy? Then, one of the best way to save money and energy is to install a tank less hot water heater in your home. These dominate the old conventional heaters because they don't require a storage tank and provides you hot water when you actually need that. This property makes them instant- on water heaters.

This no- storage type water heater provides a large range of benefits to both the consumer and the environment. The foremost advantage of this tank less unit is that it avoids continuous flow of hot water and avail you the warm or hot water when it is required. Thus, it eliminates energy lost during standby operation.

Analyzing both kind of heaters, it is found out that the on- demand water heaters are very more efficient and can easily live a life of 10 years more than the conventional systems. Also, the standby losses are very negligible.

Their easy installation and virtually no maintenance makes it the more suitable option. Not only this, the system consumes a very little space as they can be mounted on walls.

Heating the whole water that is stored in your tank is totally a wastage of energy. But tank less water heater gives you a way by which you can save 50% of the energy that is consumed in storage type water heaters. Some copper and brass rods present in tank less units make the device active when you open the hot water tap. The device remains deactivated for rest of the time.

The most basic units consists of an electric or a gas burner surrounded by flowing water. So, you have basically two types of tank less water heaters. Electric water heaters consists of two heating elements, one at the top and the other at the bottom side. These are connected to the thermostats. Electric water heaters are very small and elegant. They are capable of supplying cold water as well. Moreover it consists of two to four level of temperature control.

Very commonly used are the gas water heaters since these are less expensive as compared to other heating devices. As soon as you turn on the hot water tap, cold water is pushed into the heater which brings it into the set mode. And this is how gas heater provides you hot water instantly.

One should be very careful while installing tank less water heaters or you may go for calling in the experts for its installation in a more better way. This is because, putting it in an improper way may cause serious hazards. - 30517

Renewable Energy - Wind Farms Create High Expectations

By Tal Potishman

The United Kingdom's government pledged to lower the UK's carbon emissions by eighty percent by 2020 compared to 1990 levels. Recently, however, UK public has begun to wonder if the government is as dedicated to the cause as they claim to be.

An influential website, Wallstreetpit.com, said in a recent article that BP, a large energy company with headquarters in the UK, is closing down its Chinese, Turkish, Indian and British projects and focusing their attention on the United States. The same article implies that approximately thirty percent of the energy supply for the UK is supposed to come from windfarms. There were calls from opinion leaders in the UK asking the government why it has allowed BP to focus on the US when it (the government) says the future of British energy is green.

According to an article by the Guardian, Great Britain is one of the best locations in the world to be home to wind technology development. The popularity of Great Britain is owed mostly to the long coastline and good wind conditions that the country is famous for.

The article goes on to say that a Vattenfall and Iberdola Renovables new partnership will lead to a new United Kingdom-based windfarm. The building of this windfarm is estimated at 780m pounds and energy output is expected to be 300MW. Is this windfarm allowed because BP has refocused its attention? Why is private enterprise taking over an industry that the government claims to be invested in using?

Even more complaints are being voiced about the sum of money that will be needed to build the wind farms that will generate all of the green energy the UK's government is so enamoured with. If thirty percent of the nation's energy is going to be produced by wind farms, quite a few will need to be built to shoulder that burden. The Carbon Trust, an independent research group, has guessed that, in order to keep the government's promise the process will need to get considerably faster and-at the same time-sixteen billion pounds will need to be removed from the project's original budget. Redgreenandblue.com points out that although the UK targeted 2020 as the date by which this wind energy would be available, only twenty five percent of the wind farms will have been built by then.

Not only experts, but also most public opinions in the United Kingdom agree that renewable energy and not the current power grid is the future of energy production for the country. Green energy costs less money in the long run and is better for the globe than the current power grid system. Unfortunately, because of the shortfalls, British people should ask how committed the UK government really is to green energy. If the government truly wants to implement wind energy, why is the project budget being reduced? What is keeping the 2020 goal from happening? - 30517

Reno Plumbing For The Non Plumber.

By Bob Milderman

Reno, Nevada has been touched by the foreclosure problem like other parts of the country. And like in other areas real estate investors and first time home buyers are looking to Reno for a good deal so they can buy and sell to make a profit, rent out, or move in with their family. But in almost every case a foreclosed property will need a lot of rehab work when the buyer takes possession. And this is where the experts at Reno plumbing can help.

People who have to vacate the property because of foreclosure have months to live in the house before the legal process is complete. In that time they let the house fall into disrepair.

They neglect the plumbing work among other needs. You will find water heaters needing replacement, clogged toilets, frozen water pipes and other plumbing repairs.

If you are good with fixing plumbing then great; and if you have the time to spend then do it yourself. I myself would call a plumber. I remember one house I was living in I tried to repair the leaking faucet in the bathroom sink. I knew I had to turn off the water source before working on the faucet. But I did not find a shut off valve under the sink.

I decided the leak was so bad I did not have time to look for the valve. I was on my own because I had no finances to call a plumber. I decided that I probably did not have to shut off the water to fix a leak. So I went back into the bathroom and I looked for a wrench to fit the need and confidently proceeded with my plumbing repair.

I took off the plastic cap on the faucet knob. I knew it had something to do with a worn out washer. I chose my wrench and went to work on the ball assembly. It would not turn. I applied more and more pressure and it started to give. I thought great this will be a snap. The assembly came farther and farther out.

Right when my confidence level was at its peak the part exploded off the faucet and a fountain of water shot up to the ceiling drenching me in cold water in the process. I literally gasped from the cold shower and a second later after gaining my composure struggled to find the part I had removed. I found it and worked it back in. Standing in a puddle of water if I was in Reno it would have been time to call the experts at Reno plumbing. - 30517

Leaking Pipe Or Clogged Drain, Call The Plumbers

By Adriana Noton

Plumbers are professionals that work in homes, commercial or public buildings. They install and repair pipes for fresh water, waste and the gas systems in these buildings. In addition they can install fixtures like tubs, showers, toilets and sinks. They may also install appliances like garbage disposals, dishwashers or water heaters.

There are several ways that a plumber can enter the trade. Many learn through an apprenticeship program. While at one time this simply meant getting a job with another plumber and working your way up through the trade, today many of the apprentice programs are administered through community colleges. The apprentice must spend several years on the job and taking classes before becoming a plumber.

Most states have requirements that plumbers be licensed. Before taking the test, they must show proof of their work experience. The test shows their knowledge of local codes and of the trade.

If you are building a new home, you will need the help of a plumbing contractor. The contractor will be able to read your blueprints for the home and provide necessary materials for the plumbing portion of the construction. He will need to do "rough in" plumbing before the concrete floors are poured. Once the floors are poured and the stud walls are in place he will return to do "stub out plumbing." Finally, once the walls are finished, the floor coverings are in place and the cabinets are built, he will return a third time to install the fixtures and appliances.

Once you are in your new home or office building, you may not need a plumber very often. Many times plumbing systems are designed for many years of trouble free operation. However, over time, leaks and clogs may develop, resulting in the need for you to call the professional back to your home.

In homes, you can often avoid having to call the professional out with a few tips.

In kitchens, avoid pouring oils and greases down the drain. They are likely to harden somewhere down the ling and cause a clog to form. This clog may just stop the sink from draining, but it can also stop everything in the home from draining correctly. In addition, do not overload your garbage disposal and allow plenty of fresh water to flow when it is in use.

In the bathroom, use screens over the shower, tub and sink drains to prevent a hair clog from forming. These removable screens can be cleaned after each shower and help to prevent a slow draining fixture.

One tool that should be kept in every home is a plunger. This tool can easily dislodge many drain plugs and may save you money on plumbing repairs. You may want to purchase one that is designed for use in toilets and another that is designed for use in sinks, tubs and basins.

If you have a home repair in your plumbing system, then licensed plumbers can make that repair in an efficient manner so that you will once again have fresh water flowing into your home and drains that flow freely. - 30517

Dual flush toilets is basically an attempt in saving gallons of water, every time we uses flush. It uses two levers to flush different levels of water. Ideally we should not waste too water for flushing liquid waste and so this modern flush provides you an options to save water.

Dual flush system has become incredibly popular in various countries. Using this system we are saving water as well as money. They are available in large variety that provides your toilet a luxurious look.

Replacing the entire toilet with the new high efficiency system when the old one is still functioning properly is not acceptable to most of us. A better option is to convert the conventional water tank system with the highly efficient dual flush model.

The conversion of conventional toilets to the dual flush toilets involves a push button system which is drilled into the water tank of the toilet. For half flush smaller button is used and for full flush the larger one is used.

The added advantage to this is its simple steps of finding faults. If your flush gets operated without even touched by anyone, just ensure the flush balls are not loose. If your toilet flush doesn't work properly, just check the water level of the tank.

Since the system is quite elaborate and complex, thus includes higher amount at the time of its installation. This feature of this water saving unit limits its use. - 30517

Steps To Remove Sink Blockage

By Scott Rodgers

Is your drain sluggish? Want to get rid of odors and clogs? Then surely its a time to clear your drainage pipe. Accumulated waste such as hair, food residues etc. on the surface of the drain usually block it. Fortunately cleaning up a clogged sink is not a difficult job but a little messy. Below are some of the ways that helps cleaning up a clogged sink.

Precaution is better than cure. A very simple yet a very effective saying. Although fixing the clogged sink drain is easy but then at the same time provides a very tensed situation. Hence one should take care, anything that can block your sink drainage should not enter the sink.

You can unclog your drainage system by putting water with large amount of salt in it. Even a good quantity of hot water should be poured at regular intervals so as to keep your kitchen free from odor.

If water is not enough to shift the blockage, you can add baking soda and vinegar to the clogged drain and let it stand for sometime. This solution will gradually dissolve the clogging materials and thus eventually shifting the entire blockage.

Another way by which you can keep your sinks unclogged is a drain cleaner solutions, but make sure they don't harm your sink drainage pipes. Moreover avoid using chemicals if you have plastic pipes. One should avoid the excessive use of chemical drain cleaners.

Furthermore one can use unclogging tools such as plunger, plumber auger, pliers etc..Plunger is the tool that is more often used to clear the clogs. The basic idea of plunger is to create a vacuum over the hole of the sink by covering it with the plunger and ensuring, the rim of plunger is filled with water. Now pump its handle for few times and then release it which in turn remove the clog.

Hopefully plunging is enough to clear the blockage, and blocking is more serious you can now turn the attention on the auger. This tool is used to push the damn material inside the pipeline that is causing a clog. Move the auger until the sink begins to drain properly.

If the problem is still unsolved and something is still creating nuisance then you need to hire a plumber. He can reach the root and can troubleshoot it. - 30517

How To Solder A Cracked Plumbing Pipe ?

By Scott Rodgers

The lack of maintenance may lead to certain problems in your plumbing system. The cracked or broken pipes may be accredited to such a careless attitude of the homeowners. Hence, get the cracked pipes repaired as soon as you locate one.

Patching a cracked plumbing pipe is one such task that could be accomplished by even a novice. You can approach the problem in tow ways, either you can replace the affected section of pipe or you can patch up the cracked area of the pipe. Replacing the pipe may work in case of a small crack but fails to serve the required purpose for larger cracks. This is because the larger cracks call for a longer pipe replacement and hence, could prove costly for you.

Take a look at the plumbing tool kit to locate the essential tools and supplies. The supplies such as solder paste, solid solder, pipe couplings, torch kit, pipe wrenches, cutters, Teflon tape etc. would be required in the regular scheme of things.

Also, give enough time to the concerned plumbing segment to drain down standing water. To manually drain the affected pipe, turn on the sink and tub valves.

Mark the portion of the pipe to be removed. Leave out a margin of 2 inches on each side of the crack. Start cutting the pipe from the defined markings such that a clean cut is rendered to the pipe setup. The margin is left to accommodate the coupling fixtures.

Remove the affected portion of the pipe out of the fixture and make way for the soldering operation. In order to increase the efficiency of the soldering, apply a liberal amount of solder on all the fittings. Sand the old pipe from the head with the help of sandpaper. Repeat the same process with the new pipe and couplings as well. Take a liberal amount of solder paste on your fingers and apply it on all the connecting components. Confine the application of the paste to the areas that need to be attached.

Now, bring in a torch kit to complement the soldering operation. Use the flame of the torch to heat up the concerned juncture.

Place the solder in between the flame and allow it to melt. The melted solder would occupy the voids of the connection and would render a stringent setting to the pipe. - 30517
