How To Fix A Leaking Tap ?

By Scott Rodgers

One of the most common plumbing problem faced at home is leaking taps. But you need not always call a plumber to fix it. You can easily fix it on your own. Below are some simple instructions for fixing a leaky tap.

Before working on the leaking tap, you have to turn off the water supply first. Be careful when turning the valve off so that it won't break apart.

Next thing that you should do is, cover the sink hole. This is important to prevent any material like screws, washers etc. from falling down the drain. Then using a screwdriver open the tap cover and remove the retaining screw. After that, remove the head of the tap.

Use a spanner to remove the headgear nut. But be very careful while performing this step and make sure that you do not damage the attached pipes otherwise you would end up in a bigger leak which can be tough to handle and then you would have to call a professional plumber to fix it.

If you are unable to turn the headgear nut, use some oil around the joint, wait for 5 minutes and then try to remove it again. This will make your work easier.

Remove the washer using a screwdriver. If you're having difficulty removing the washer, you could try to use oil again to lubricate it.

Fit in a new washer in place of the old one. Before reassembling everything, grease the base of the tap. Use a screwdriver and a spanner to put everything back into place. Turn on the water supply to check if the problem was solved.

After following the above steps, if you are not able to fix the issue, then it's time to call a professional plumber as some things are better left for the experts. - 30517
