Home Plumbing Problems And Their Solutions

By Scott Rodgers

The usual plumbing emergencies that happen at home include leaks, bursting pipes, broken faucets, clogged drains and toilets, overflowing toilet tanks, and frozen pipes. Here are simple steps to follow when these plumbing emergencies occur.

For any leaking issues or in case of overflowing toilet tanks, you should immediately turn off the nearest water valve or the main water supply valve. This should be done very quickly to avoid any kind of accidents as in case of big leaks water can damage the walls and floors and can even reach an area where there is electrical wiring.

If you have a water heating system installed, also switch off the power for the water heating system when you shut off the water valve. This is to avoid accidents when someone turns on the shower or a hot water faucet. The remaining water in the pipe tends to heat too much since water is no longer free flowing.

After you have turned off all the required switches and water valves, it is time to call a professional plumber who can repair all the necessary pipes and fixtures. Side by side you should start cleaning the water spread on floor as it can cause harm to other kitchen or bathroom products.

For clogged drains and toilets, turn off the water valve or faucet to avoid overflowing. The first option to declog the drain or toilet is to use a plunger to remove whatever is clogging the drain. Make sure you have separate plungers for the sink, tub and the toilet. If using the plunger does not work, then contact a plumber to properly remove the obstructing object by opening the pipes.

Many a times, you will come across a situation when you are not able to turn off the kitchen faucet. How hard you try, but the water flow is just nor stopping. In such a case all you need to do is replace the faucet with a new one. And you can easily do it without calling a plumber but you should have the right tools for it.

First, shut off the valve to the faucet, or the main water valve. Then, remove the faucet with a wrench. Replace with a new faucet, making sure it fits properly to avoid leaks and turn on the water valve and test the new faucet.

Areas with extremely cold temperatures, can face a problem of freezing pipes. You can use a warm hair blower to defrost it. It is an easy and a safe method for your pipes and other fittings. To prevent the pipes from freezing in such areas, make sure that your home heating is warm enough. - 30517
