How To Install A Toilet Flush Valve ?

By Scott Rodgers

When ensuring a complete sanitation to your home, plumbing assignments such as replacing a broken toilet flush valve, cannot be left pending. This would completely hurt the sanitation schema of your toilet and bathroom. Instead of availing the services of a plumber straightaway, take the assignment in your own hands.

One such issue is the replacement of the flush valve of your toilet. Beforehand make sure that the flush valve actually requires a replacement and it can't be fixed.

Foremost thing to do before commencing any plumbing project is to notify yourself about the availability of the required plumbing tools. Do you have all those essential plumbing tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, Teflon tape etc. in tact ? Also make sure that you've turned off the main water supply prior to the repair work.

Next, open the lid of the tank and empty it by either flushing down the water or removing it with a small container. If still some water is left in the tank then clean it out using a piece of cloth. Now start dissociating the valve chain that is attached to a trip arm in the underlying setup.

Now move to the actual task of detaching the old or broken flush valve from the toilet fixture. Simply lift the valve or the flapper from the flush valve seat by detaching the clips (on the side) from the overflow tube. The method of detachment of the flush valve varies depending on the type of flush valve you're using. Once the flush valve is completely detached from the setup, make way for a new flush valve. Make sure that the new flush valve is similar to the old one in terms of the flapper style and the adjoining clips.

Place the new flush valve on the flush valve seat and bind the clips to the fixture on both sides of the overflow tube. Once clipped, check the flapper to make sure it rests flat on the flush valve seat.

Attach the valve chain to the trip chain again and finish off the installation of the new flush valve.

Render normal water supply to the tank and let it fill. Now test the efficiency of the newly installed flush valve by flushing the toilet. - 30517
