How To Maintain Your Septic Tank ?

By Scott Rodgers

All the households that are deprived of a proper sewage setup authorized by the government rely on the traditional septic systems.

The septic systems make way for lesser maintenance cost as compared to the typical sewage pipelines. The septic tanks which are often made up of concrete or plastic, collect all the said waste and decays it with the biological action of bacteria. It is well assisted by a drain field that discharges the overflowing water from the tank to the soil. The tanks are often planted in the ground.

Ensuring that your septic system doesn't get crippled owing to problems in the septic tank, regular examination of the setup must be carried out. Sometimes the malfunctioning of the tank may also result in a potential environmental adversity. Hence the maintenance of you septic tank is significant enough to find a place in the scheme of the things.

Start the examination of the septic tank by opening the lid of the tank. A high water level in the tank would indicate the possibility of a fault whereas a moderate or low water level would ensure smooth functioning of the tank. In case the water level is high, put a plumber's snake into the pipe to the drain field. If the snake comes back with a mud on its front then fault is detected in the drain field. The drain field might be broken or cracked and deserves a quick replacement to restore the efficiency of the tank.

In case the drain field looks as normal as ever then the accumulation of mud, scum or other foreign materials at the bottom of the tank could be paving way for the trouble. A full-fledged pumping operation has to be undertaken to clear out all the matter from the tank that is obstructing the smooth functioning of your septic system.

Besides these problems, the problem with the soil condition around the drain field may crop up. The sandy soils normally have a better longevity than the clay soils. Clay soils tend to clog or hinder the piping of the septic tank more often than the clay soils.

Besides these, commercially available products and chemicals can help in unblocking the septic pipes and the drainage.

Make way for an expert if complications are encountered during the maintenance task so that things don't get messy and chaotic. - 30517
