Choosing Best Water Softener For Your House

By Scott Rodgers

It is amazing to think that how a softener converts the hard water into soft water and removes all the hardness causing minerals from it. Here we will talk in more details about water softeners.

The most popular method of removing hardness is ion exchange. In this process, the hardness causing minerals like calcium and magnesium are interchanged with sodium ion to make water clean and fit for drinking.

Softeners consist of a resin tank which is made from minute beads of sodium. This sodium is exchanged with calcium and magnesium of hard water when the water comes into this resin tank. The calcium and magnesium ions are now collected into a brine tank with the help of softener control valve. The brine tank then consumes these ions and supply you clean and soft water.

There are two types of home water softeners available- Automatic softeners and Demand initiated regeneration (DIR). Automatic softeners come with a timer that controls the ion regeneration process, usually at night. Demand initiated regeneration runs on autopilot mode, everything in this is pre planned and the softener does what it has to do depending on the usage of water.

Softeners using other technology than ion exchange are also present in market like one using charcoal filters but all such softeners are more expensive and not so effective as usual softeners.

Water softener system is not a device that a homeowner will take again and again. Hence, he needs to take a decision in a single go and prefer a softener that goes with all his necessities.

Selection of a softener also depends on amount of water used and in turn number of members in your family. Approximately 240 gallons of water are used in a family of 3 members and a gallon contains around 10 grains of hardness. So you need to take a softener that has efficiency to remove 2400 grains per day and work properly.

Hence, you need to select a softener that can be easily cleaned, conveniently handled and have sufficient warranty. You also need to check from where you are taking the softener means the brand name of your water softener should be good and it should be approved by government. - 30517
